The University of London is a globally renowned teaching and research institution with more than 18,000 students. Established in 1927, the university operates across two campuses in London along with a remote site in China.
To strengthen its competitive position while managing increasing budget constraints, the university initiated an IT transformation programme. The objective was to deliver an improved digital experience for students, staff, partners and other users of IT services without compromising operational efficiency. One of the key challenges involved managing multiple legacy authentication systems alongside cloud-based services, supporting BYOD initiatives, and preventing unauthorised access to sensitive data.

Through a series of transformation initiatives, the university implemented several new systems and services. While these changes delivered considerable benefits, the evolving environment also introduced new challenges related to efficiency, security and integration.
One of the key challenges involved managing multiple legacy authentication systems alongside cloud-based services. The university also needed to support Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiatives and simplified access to services, while preventing unauthorised access to sensitive data.
To move forward, the university recognised that federated authentication, single sign-on (SSO), and multi-factor authentication (MFA) would become critical components of its identity strategy.
The institution also needed to rationalise its authentication infrastructure and adopt a single identity solution that could maintain security standards while preserving the high-quality digital experience expected by students and staff.
Following a competitive selection process, Trevonix was chosen as the IAM partner due to its ability to fully meet the university’s technical and operational requirements.
Trevonix proposed a cloud-based Identity-as-a-Service (IDaaS) platform to support the deployment of modern authentication technologies across the university’s digital ecosystem.
By implementing a cloud-based identity solution, Trevonix was able to replace the university’s existing Shibboleth service, which was used to access many of the institution’s library resources.
The new platform extended Single Sign-On capabilities across multiple applications and services, including:
The solution also laid the foundation for further modernisation initiatives. The IDaaS platform is planned to replace the university’s aging central authentication service and will support the organisation’s migration to Microsoft O365, replacing its reliance on ADFS.
To address security and data protection requirements, Trevonix implemented multi-factor authentication using SMS. The flexible authentication capabilities and ease of use of the solution impressed the university, leading to plans to extend MFA protection to additional services such as VPN access.

The implementation resulted in a streamlined and consistent digital experience across the university’s IT services.
Students, staff, and external partners now benefit from simplified access to applications and services through a unified authentication platform.
By consolidating identity technologies into a single platform, the university significantly reduced operational complexity and improved efficiency across its IT environment.
The solution also strengthened the university’s security posture while maintaining compliance requirements and supporting ongoing digital transformation initiatives.
