Delivering a Seamless Digital Identity Experience for the United Rugby Championship

Overview

The United Rugby Championship (URC) sought to modernise its customer identity and access management capabilities to support a growing digital ecosystem spanning websites, mobile applications, and its TV platform.

Partnering with Trevonix, URC aimed to replace its fragmented legacy setup with a centralised, scalable Customer Identity and Access Management (CIAM) solution built on the Auth0 Customer Identity Cloud. The initiative focused on providing a seamless registration, authentication, and secure profile management experience for over 16.5 M+ existing customers and future users.

The Challenge

Prior to the project, URC faced several critical challenges regarding customer identity management:

  • Fragmented Identity Data: Customer accounts were distributed across multiple legacy systems, causing profile data inconsistencies and increasing operational complexity.
  • Duplicate Accounts: Users registered through different authentication methods over time, resulting in fragmented records and poor data quality.
  • Lack of Self-Service: The organisation lacked a unified self-service portal, making profile management difficult for users and increasing support team overhead.
  • Security & Integration Gaps: URC required stronger security controls, improved onboarding journeys, and a robust way to synchronise real-time customer data with downstream business systems and reporting platforms.

The Solution

Trevonix designed and implemented a centralised Auth0 Customer Identity Cloud solution to serve as the single source of truth:

  • Unified Authentication Architecture: Configured a custom authentication domain and a branded login experience utilising Auth0 Universal Login across URC's website, iOS/Android mobile apps, and URC TV platform.
  • Modern Login & Account Linking: Introduced passwordless options (passkeys and biometrics) and implemented an intelligent account-linking strategy to automatically merge matching social and credential-based profiles.
  • Self-Service Portal: Developed a dedicated, secure profile management portal deployed under the URC domain structure so users could update preferences and settings independently.
  • Real-Time Event Streaming: Implemented webhook integrations and event streaming to automatically transmit real-time user lifecycle notifications (creation, updates, deletions) to their warehouse.
  • Automated Data Operations: Built a Node.js-based export utility to securely extract user data and generate structured Excel reports on demand for business intelligence.
